UAB’s Title IX office will host a conference on Tuesday, April 10 to help the Blazer community identify and appropriately respond to complaints of sexual misconduct at UAB. This free, campus-wide forum is dual-fold and includes two separate events that cater to students and employees.
Both workshops will take place in Volker Hall, Lecture Room A. The first session, scheduled from 3:30-4:15 p.m., is Title IX Responsible Employee Training and aims to help attendees understand the reporting obligations for responsible employees. The talk will feature special guest Saundra Schuster, a recognized expert in preventative and civil rights law for education and a partner with The National Center for Higher Education Risk Management Group LLC. The second session – Title IX Student Leadership Training – will take place at 6 p.m. and will focus on teaching students how to identify and respond to discrimination based on sex.
Title IX has coordinated this two-part conference in hopes of empowering two very distinct but overlapping audiences. Organizers wish to equip both students and employees with knowledge that will help them identify prohibited conduct under the Title IX Sexual Violence and Sexual Misconduct Policy, as well as clarify the appropriate response to peers who may have experienced prohibited conduct and sex-based discrimination. Faculty and staff will also leave with a better understanding of the reporting obligations for responsible employees.
“This training is important for our community because it is our individual responsibility to foster an environment free of all forms of sex-based discrimination,” said Title IX Coordinator Kasey M. Robinson, J.D., M.P.A. “This will be an opportunity to gain the tools needed to prevent, address, report, or stop an act of Prohibited Conduct on UAB’s campus.”
