Undecided on what career to pursue after college? Consider taking advantage of these online resources offered by the Career Center: Focus 2 and Candid Career. Assistant Director of Career Education, Tiffany Holloway, states that these resources are designed to “provide easy access to career exploration” and to allow students to “go at their own pace of discovery.”

Focus 2 is a tool that provides self-assessments in different categories, including personality, skills, values, work interests, and leisure activities. Holloway quotes that this online resource “gives students insight into who they are” in a way that’s uninfluenced by the opinions of others, since the students get to answer questions about themselves and receive results based off their input.

After completing each assessment, students will be matched with a list of careers and majors offered at UAB that support those careers. This will help students get an idea of what careers best suit them, as well as what UAB major(s) can help prepare them for a future career. Holloway even tried out the assessments herself and discovered that her suggested career paths were spot on with the career she has today. She also recalls working with students in the past who reported that the assessments confirmed the career paths they already had in mind to pursue, while others have reported that the assessments revealed to them career paths they hadn’t considered before.

Next, Candid Career is a site that stores thousands of videos students can watch of people answering questions about their career. According to Holloway, this online resource “explores, for instance, different majors by interviewing people and asking them—those in the actual career field—what their major did for them to get them to their particular career space.”

Candid Career also explores an alphabet of career titles, that way students can check out a wide range of careers. By watching one of many interviews, students can learn what to expect and how to prepare for a certain career.
