UAB’s Transfer Student Organization (TSO) hosted a celebration breakfast Thursday morning as transfer student week comes to a close. Students came together to enjoy a catered breakfast, connect with their peers, and hear from speakers about available resources that can support transfer students as they adjust to UAB’s campus.
Did you know that 60% of college students don’t graduate from the institution where they begin? Herbert Wilkerson, director of Student Engagement & Enrichment, shared some of the many resources and organizations available to UAB transfer students to help them acclimate, such as: Transfer Student Organization, The UAB Recreation Center, and Student Counseling Services.
Ahkeem Lee, Coordinator of Off-Campus Student Engagement, said, “The biggest thing transfer students need here at UAB is support. They need to know that there are resources here for them. They need to know that there are professional staff to help them in transitioning to the university.” That is why there is a platform such as the Transfer Student Organization, with the sole purpose of helping students get acclimated, connected, and engaged on and off campus.
Daleya Scafe, a UAB student, and member of the TSO Leadership Team, says the most rewarding part of being involved with TSO is “having a community that understands where you’re coming from. We may not have the same major, we may not be interested in the same things on campus, but we can come together at TSO and share our experiences.”
