UAB Student Involvement & Leadership and the UAB Service Council are proud to present Birmingham 101: Ramsay on Nov. 6, 2017, at 5 p.m. in the Hill Student Center Alumni Theater. As the official series installment for the Fall 2017 semester, the event will feature a screening of a mini-documentary produced by UAB Student Media, followed by a discussion and open reception. The screening will highlight community members and advocates with ties to Ramsay High School, who will subsequently provide insight into the development of the school and Birmingham over the years.
Coordinated by the Civic Engagement Committee of UAB’s Leadership and Service Council, the Birmingham 101 series focuses on the rich heritage of Magic City neighborhoods as reflected through local high schools, because many school populations mirror that of their surrounding communities. The idea for this series came about as organizers (David Dada, coordinator of civic engagement) reflected on the fact that many UAB students are not from the Birmingham area, which created a subsequent need to combat negative perceptions and misinformation about the city. Birmingham 101 aims to broaden students’ knowledge about Birmingham’s diverse neighborhoods as well as deepen students’ understanding of the local and social justice issues that impact each neighborhood.
Previously featured high schools include West End, Woodlawn, Parker and Ensley, with documentary interviewees and panelists including distinguished guests like UAB President Ray Watts (West End ‘72).
This event is free and open to the public. For more information and disability accommodations, contact Student Involvement and Leadership at 205-934-8020 or at getinvolved@uab.edu.
