The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Career Center and Hill Student Center Operations hosted an unveiling of its new Iris Photo Booth in the Hill Student Center on Tuesday, Dec. 3. Brandon Wright, Ph.D, director of the UAB Career Center opened the event with remarks; Mary Wallace,Ph.D, assistant vice president for Student Experience; and Patricia A.R. Martinez, assistant vice president for Student Affairs & Director of Division Operations echoed his comments. John Jones III, Ph.D., vice president for Student Affairs, demonstrated the first public use of the booth.
UAB is one of three universities in the state with an Iris Photo Booth and demonstrates the university’s commitment to student success and career readiness. The Iris Photo Booth is an innovative way for students to take free, professional headshots anytime the Hill Student Center is open. Shortly before the unveiling, students began lining up for photos that can be used for resumes, professional profiles like LinkedIn, and more.
Ann Bankston, a junior communications major, said, “This will be a great opportunity for students, especially going into their careers in the future.” Kaya Whitfield, a junior Nursing major, said, “I think that this gives UAB students an opportunity that they may not have had before, whether that be due to resources or due to financial ability. The fact that this is a free resource at the center of campus, I think is a great step to help us reach our goals.”
Dr. Wright hopes to have 1,000 students visit the photo booth during its first year of operation. “I think it’s going to be a great asset for our students. In the (UAB) Career Center, we get several requests each year from students that need headshots. Now with this, we don’t have to count on good weather, location, or even timing. As long as the Hill Student Center is open, students can get a professional headshot which helps them with their professional development identity.”
Any student with a valid BlazerID can visit the photo booth, conveniently located on the second floor of the Hill Student Center, across from the UAB Bookstore.
