In the middle of an Alabama summer and its sweltering heat, the country’s last standing blast furnace, Birmingham’s Sloss Furnaces, will play host once again to some of the hottest bands for the second annual Sloss Music and Arts Festival.
On July 16-17 the historical site will open its doors for a weekend of great music from an eclectic mix of bands and artists, as well as some of the best in local brews and foods.
The inaugural iteration saw the likes of Modest Mouse, Cage the Elephant, Primus and St. Paul & the Broken Bones do their thing in the molten core of the Magic City, and this year’s lineup looks just as strong, combining headlining bands such as the Flaming Lips, Ryan Adams and Death Cab for Cutie playing alongside strong up and coming acts like Junior Junior, the Joy Formidable and Hudson Mohawke.
For fans of indie rock, singer/songwriter enthusiasts, throwbacks to the ‘90s and the “Reg’s Coffee” crowd, the roster can’t be missed. Beyond the music, the furnaces will be fired up for some iron pouring and casting demos and some of the area’s best artists and graphic designers, such as local jewelry maker Ann Conway and the American Poster Institute, will be setting up shop to both show off and sell their work.
The festival kicks off at 12:30 p.m. and is an all-ages affair. Tickets start at $85 for single day passes and $135 for two day passes. The lineup and more info about the event can be found at slossfest.com.
