Request Sign Language Interpreters

  • DSS (Disability Student Services) recommends at least two weeks’ notice for events short in duration (ex: presentation, informational session, lunch and learn, etc.).
  • Provide at least one month’s notice for events like conferences, seminars, etc. Interpreters in the local area are limited so the more notice, the better.
  • DSS will contact interpreter providers for requests being submitted on behalf of a student accommodation. Service provider information will be sent to the contact that created request if submitted so the proper point of contact and payment will be provided to provider.
  • Faculty/Staff please fill out the ASL Interpreting Request Form to request a sign language interpreter.
  • It is standard practice for two or more interpreters to be present for events lasting longer than one hour (training, conferences, etc.).
  • DSS will continue to be available for consultation on ASL interpreter requests and for other resources that may be necessary in working with Deaf/hard of hearing populations.

Video Remote Interpreting

Please note in certain circumstances to secure an interpreter requesting video remote interpreting is an option. (VRI (Video Remote Interpreting)) is a form of sign language interpreting that allows people who are deaf or hard of hearing to communicate with a hearing person at the same site via videoconferencing instead of live, on-site interpreting. Please ensure that you have planned and have the correct equipment to host VRI for your event.

FAQs

  • Is DSS responsible for the payment of sign language interpreters?

DSS provides sign language interpreting as accommodation for students with disabilities. These sign language interpreting services are offered through the office as a direct service for approved students with this accommodation need. A department is responsible for payment for sign language interpreting services for activities outside of providing disability-related accommodations or DSS-collaborated events.

  • What information should I list when contacting interpreters for their services?

Include the name, email and phone number of the person handling the invoice processing. List the date, location, and duration of the event. It is also helpful to provide alternative contacts that interpreters can contact.

Interpreters must prep to ensure we do their best work. Prep materials also allow interpreters to really know if the job is something they can really handle or are the best fit for. For example, if there is an event, like a presentation or panel, please provide information such as PowerPoint slides, presenter bios, etc.
