Educational Priority
UAB Student Housing and Residence Life supports the mission of UAB by fostering the intellectual, cultural, and social growth of on-campus residents in order for them to take a positive role in the local community and beyond.
Through intentional interactions and engagement with residence life staff, residential students will be able to develop skills in 3 learning areas:
- Understanding of Self (Self)
- Relationships with Others (Others)
- Investing in the Community (Community)
To accomplish the learning of these goals, Residence Life staff have the ability to be creative in their methods of establishing intentional initiatives to allow residential students the opportunity to progress through each learning area. By focusing on intentional interactions aimed at getting students involved in their learning environment, utilizing on-campus resources, and building collaborative partnerships between students, faculty, and staff, the department plans to get students involved in their collegiate experience, leading to personal, professional, and academic growth.
Residence life staff implement strategies to achieve the learning outcomes based on the needs of the students in their residential community. Through the successful implementation of strategies, Student Housing and Residence life staff will challenge and support students as they transition through phases of college life at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, resulting in a holistic college experience.
Learning Goal #1: Students will learn about themselves
Understanding of Self
The student residential experience assists in developing a healthy sense of self through experiences that help students articulate their own values and individual identity. Through this process residents will grow in understanding their own responsibility in meeting their personal and academic goals.
Learning Goal #2: Students will learn how to foster positive interpersonal relationships
Relationships with Others
The residential experience immerses students in an unfamiliar and dynamic environment. For such an environment to function effectively, students must develop positive interpersonal relationships, often with others who have different values and world views. The residential curriculum should help students develop strategies that create successful interpersonal relationships within a diverse community.
Learning Goal #3: Students will take a positive role in their community
Investing in the Community
With independence comes a responsibility to make a positive contribution to the wider community. Students living on-campus are exposed to a variety of opportunities to take an active role in serving the campus, Birmingham, and beyond.
