High priority is given to the security of residents and this is the basis for policies regulating access into the residence halls. Residents are required to carry their UAB ONE Card with them at all times and must surrender their UAB ONE Card at the request of a University official, Student Housing staff member, and/or desk assistant for identification purposes at any time.
All of the halls are locked 24 hours a day and require a UAB ONE Card for entry. Lobby desks are operated 24 hours a day, Monday through Sunday. Entrance through doors marked Exit Only is not permitted. Propping or otherwise obstructing exterior doors is prohibited. Residence Hall Staff monitor the access to the halls and enforce the visitation policy. These individuals are in communication with the UAB Police and Housing Precinct for immediate response to emergencies. Housing Police Precinct Coverage is through all the residence halls and surrounding areas 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Safety is a top priority at UAB. We have an accredited police force that patrols our campus 24 hours a day. A supervisor and several officers from the UAB Police Department’s special Student Housing Police Precinct routinely patrol the residence halls and parking areas on foot and on bicycle. Officers interact with students and conduct programs and activities to help residents prevent crime. All residence halls have front desks manned around the clock, and all guests must show a photo ID, sign in, and be escorted by a resident of the building before they can pass the front desk.
What if students are out and about? Blazer Express, UAB's campus bus service, offers free transportation for students, employees, and authorized visitors along six routes - some of which run as late as midnight. Just show your One Card to ride. Late night, on-demand van service is also available Tuesday-Saturday from midnight to 5:30 a.m. through Blazer Express.
In case of emergency, UAB has more than 400 Help Phones in buildings, parking lots, and many other locations—look for the blue light and the word HELP—to put students directly in touch with the UAB Police. All phones are monitored 24 hours a day.
NOTE: Our campus really is a safe place to be, but if you see anything suspicious or threatening, by all means contact UAB Police. For emergency calls, dial 911 from any campus phone or 205-934-3535 (934-HELP)for the UAB Police Department. For non-emergencies, you can reach UAB Police at 205-934-4434.
