Introducing UAB’s New Visual Identity System
At the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), we are proud to unveil a refreshed visual identity that reflects our dynamic growth, commitment to excellence, and bold vision for the future. UAB’s brand refresh is more than logos; it is designed to enhance the way we present ourselves to the world. For the first time in our history we share a primary logo that will be used across university, medicine and athletics.

Why Refresh Our Brand?
Our visual identity is a key element of how we communicate our values, mission, and our pride in being part of the UAB community. After extensive research and engagement with students, faculty, staff, alumni, patients, and other stakeholders, we identified specific challenges and opportunities to improve our brand’s clarity, consistency, and impact. UAB has grown tremendously over the past half century, and refreshing our brand reflects this evolution. The goal is to increase our brand recognition and have a united front in our efforts to recruit future students, employees, and patients, as well as raising awareness of our core mission that includes education, research and patient care.
Key Changes in Our New Identity
Branded House Model
This refresh establishes a unified primary logo that will be consistently used across all UAB entities: university, medicine and athletics, which is a common model among other national university brands.
Refreshed Monogram
Our monogram now features a cleaner design with spaced lettering for improved legibility and recognition, particularly for stakeholders outside our region. In this brand refresh, the monogram may be used on its own in special use cases or be presented as a lockup with the word mark, which was previously the only option. This new flexibility will help increase regional and national brand recognition.
Current
New
Unified Medicine Model
UAB Medicine will become a unified brand that will share the same primary colors and fonts with the university and athletics. The UAB Medicine logo will be used to represent UAB’s medical education, research, and clinical care. Details and guidance will be released at the full launch slated for early 2025.
Refreshed Color Palette
The brand refresh re-establishes UAB’s official colors as green and gold. (Previous official colors were green and white with gold accents.) The updated color palette features a richer, darker green and a brighter gold, which are also offered in metallic gold options. These updates ensure web accessibility and expanded availability of apparel and branded merchandise.

Brand Font
Aktiv Grotesk was selected as our new brand font. This modern sans-serif font enhances readability and brings a contemporary look to our communications. Additionally, we are adopting title case in the primary logo lockup, instead of all uppercase letters, further increasing readability, accessibility, and improved visual appeal for our long university name. Our former logo featured Avenir, and Proxima Nova was used as a web font. Our new logo features Aktiv Grotesk, which may also be used on web. It’s an Adobe Typekit font accessible via Creative Cloud, a UAB enterprise-wide tool.
Current Avenir
New Aktiv Grotesk
New Primary Athletics Logo
Gold has long been a signature color for UAB Athletics, and the new athletics logo features a strong gold outline that distinguishes it from the university and UAB Medicine logos. This outline treatment was popular in our testing and is reminiscent of the approach by other unified university brands to their athletics marks. Blaze will continue to be highly visible as the secondary logo for Athletics, as well as a university-wide spirit mark.
Refreshed Blaze Logo
Minor changes to Blaze ensured his form was not altered, but enhanced: replacing black accents with green, transitioning to the brighter color palette. We’ve also changed small elements to improve representation in print materials and merchandise, and updating his dragon features, including teeth and ears. Blaze will continue to be prominently used as a secondary logo for UAB Athletics and will also be available to the entire UAB community as a spirit mark.

New Spirit Marks
We’re excited to introduce a collection of university-wide spirit marks, some of which that incorporate Blaze. This provides flexibility in merchandise and broader use across the enterprise.
Phased Implementation
Refreshing our brand is a long-term endeavor that will take many years. Our initial rollout will happen in phases. Particularly in our physical environment, we aim to update logos at regularly scheduled improvement cycles. In some places, our former logos, known as legacy logos, will stay with us for years to come. This approach is most feasible to implement and is more financially sound.

General Questions
-
Why is UAB refreshing its brand?
As a leading research university and academic health system, UAB’s brand needs to reflect the strength and dynamism of our mission. To ensure our brand remains relevant and impactful, we have undertaken extensive research and engaged numerous stakeholders to analyze the perception, meaning, and recognition of our brand. This refresh is focused on preparing UAB for the future and increasing our brand recognition. The update addresses several key challenges, including:
- Improving the legibility of the UAB logo
- Ensuring consistency across brand elements
- Creating a unified family of marks
- Defining the role of our beloved Blaze logo
- Clarifying official school colors
- Enhancing UAB’s brand recognition beyond our city and state
This brand refresh is designed to ensure that UAB’s visual identity continues to stand strong and effectively represent our institution’s excellence and vision for the future. We’ve documented our decision making and process all along the way: link to research section
-
What is the cost of a brand refresh?
The brand refresh is a strategic investment in UAB’s future, designed to enhance our visibility and reputation. We have been cost-conscious from the start, with much of the work being led by our in-house marketing and creative teams, along with volunteer committees that represented stakeholders across the enterprise. We went through a competitive bid process and selected two agencies to work with: one to conduct brand research and another to develop our new logos.
While updating logos is much easier in digital and print, we recognize that is not the case in the physical environment, which is why we are taking a phased approach and only updating during regularly scheduled improvements and as new buildings come on line. This approach ensures that we balance the need for a refreshed brand with practical and budget-conscious implementation.
-
Who are the decision-makers for the brand refresh process?
We engaged stakeholder input every step of the way. Collaboration is a shared value across UAB, which is why multiple stakeholder groups, including employees, alumni, students, leadership, and more, were engaged to provide input throughout this journey. For every member of the UAB community who shared their feedback, we thank you for your contribution to our new visual identity system.
-
What will happen to our former logos?
Our former logos will be honored as legacy logos, acknowledging their significant role in UAB’s identity history. While our refreshed visual identity will become the primary representation of UAB, legacy logos will hold a special place in our community. We plan to bring these logos out on special occasions to celebrate our history and the evolution of our brand. This approach is similar to other universities where legacy logos and historical seals are preserved for ceremonial purposes and special events, ensuring a nod to the past while embracing a refreshed identity for the future.
Implementation
-
Why is there a phased rollout of the new brand?
While it’s relatively easy to update in digital and print, a complete overhaul will not happen overnight. A phased approach allows us to address changes intentionally, and in a more fiscally responsible manner. As part of our brand research process, we learned from other universities who have rebranded and developed this approach as the best way to introduce new logos.
-
When and where may I download new logos?
Beginning on August 26th, the primary logos for the university, medicine and athletics, along with spirit marks will be available for download and internal use.
-
How will UAB signage be impacted by the new brand?
UAB’s legacy logos appear across numerous building signs across campus, as well as the state. There is no intention to update logos in the physical environment unless it is part of a regularly scheduled improvement cycle. New logos in high-impact areas will be considered as budget allows, and legacy logos will remain for years to come.
-
May I feature the new logo in the profile image for my school / department / unit’s social media account?
There will be a coordinated effort to have all official university social media accounts update their logos together. This date will be determined and shared through eReporter and outreach through the Office of Marketing and Communications.
-
How and when will I have access to my new school / department / unit logo?
These logos, along with full guidance, will be available on the new brand toolkit that will launch in January 2025.
-
May I create my own school/department/unit logo with the new UAB monogram to use now?
New school/department/unit logos will not be available until January 2025. Until then, please continue using the current logo. Manipulating old logos or creating new logos outside the Office of Marketing and Communications (MarComm) is not permitted. Only official UAB logos created by MarComm may be used to reflect the UAB brand. Official UAB primary lock-up university logos are available for use now.
-
When may I purchase merchandise using the new brand?
Beginning August 26th, you may purchase merchandise using the core university logos. However, if you plan to purchase merchandise with your school, college, or unit logo, please continue to use your current logos until the new ones are available for download when we launch the full brand toolkit in January 2025. Plan ahead and learn how to order promotional items and apparel for your unit.
-
Where can I buy UAB branded merchandise with the new logo?
The UAB Bookstore is our preferred retailer because every purchase directly provides support back to the university and UAB Athletics. A purchase at the UAB bookstore is a great way to show your Blazer spirit. You can shop online or at the campus store. Can’t find what you need? Let us know at

Why did the brand refresh process seem so long?
While our brand research journey began in 2019, the global COVID 19 pandemic in 2020 halted our progress for a couple years. In fall 2022, we were finally able to resume progress by selecting a creative agency to partner with, and creative work began in spring 2023. The entire process spanned across 3+ years, which is what we originally planned.
Visual Identity
-
Will secondary color palettes be made available?
Yes, our creative team is working to develop extended color palettes that will be made available when the full brand toolkit is launched in January 2025.
-
I’m in the UAB Heersink School of Medicine. Should I begin using the new UAB Medicine brand?
Please continue using the current UAB Heersink School of Medicine logo until the full launch in January 2025.
-
What happens to the “flame UAB” that UAB Athletics previously used as a secondary logo?
This mark did not perform well in our brand research and will be retired as a legacy logo.
-
Will the Blaze mascot costume be updated?
Because the Blaze logo refresh included minor enhancements, there is no need to revise our current Blaze mascot costume.
-
Is Blaze going away?
No. Our beloved Blaze mascot is here to stay! Blaze will continue to be prominently used as a secondary logo for UAB Athletics. Additionally, Blaze will be available to the entire UAB community as a spirit mark, making our mascot even more visible.
-
Why does the spacing (a.k.a. kerning) in the new UAB monogram seem unequal?
Kerning - the spacing between characters or letters - is something we put a lot of thought into when developing our new UAB monogram. Our committee, which included both external and internal graphic design and typography experts, explored alternate versions of kerning, which created other visual oddities and challenges. Through our collective work, we feel confident we made the best decision regarding kerning of the new UAB monogram.

Core Logos
We are removing "Knowledge that will change your world" from the core logo. Units may still use this tagline in existing materials; however, University Relations will no longer distribute the logo with the tagline locked up.
The core UAB logo — monogram + wordmark — now comes in an extreme horizontal format, designed to work best in the tight spaces on mobile screens.
Standard Logo
The standard UAB logo (monogram + wordmark) incorporates two graphic elements: the UAB monogram and “The University of Alabama at Birmingham” wordmark.
Centered Logo
The centered logo can be used when space is limited or when the logo must appear in a grouping with other logos, such as with sponsorships or partnership listings.
Extreme Horizontal Logo
The extreme horizontal logo can be used when space is limited or when the logo must appear in the tight spaces of screens on digital devices.
UAB Watermark
The circular watermark may be used only where embroidery patches traditionally have been used on uniforms such as lab coats, smocks, and scrubs. Where required, metallic medallions, coins, certificates, and lapel pins also may use a circular configuration. The watermark should be paired with the full UAB logo where possible.
University Seal
The university seal is a registered trademark reserved for official and ceremonial uses only, as determined by University Relations. Examples include diplomas, legal documents, commencement programs, policy manuals, formal invitations, certificates, and awards. The official seal symbolizes the formal authority vested in the university.
-
School/College/Central Unit Logos
The unit logos combine the UAB logo and a school/college/central unit identifier in a single graphic image. In order to establish greater brand consistency — and with the understanding that many people who see our communications are not familiar with the UAB acronym — President Watts has asked that we use the full university name in the logo and limit lockups to UAB schools, colleges, and central (VP-level) units.

Logos are limited to the following schools/colleges/central units:

Center & Institute Logos
The logos below were created for entities that have undergone UA System Board of Trustees’ approval to become official UAB centers or institutes. Board approval is required before centers and institutes are established or dissolved, change their name, move to another school, combine with another center, or shift their main focus. The Board defines an official center or institute as an entity with a primary focus that falls within one of two categories:
- Instruction or research centers and institutes have, as a major focus, activities related to the instruction of students or the conduct of research.
- Service centers and institutes have a major focus on activities related to the dissemination of information or the provision of service to the community.
Some UAB entities belong to a federal grant, such as NIH. In this case, the Board approval process is unnecessary, and official university logo lockups are available. Contact

Anniversary Marks
University Anniversary Marks
Toolkit and Style GuideOfficial marks have been created to help UAB’s units celebrate their 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, and 100th anniversaries. Using anniversary marks correctly will present a consistent, shared look and feel. It also will increase awareness of UAB’s history of innovation and achievement among students, employees, donors, partners, advocates, and the public.

When and where should I use anniversary marks?
UAB units celebrating a 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, or 100th anniversary may use an official anniversary mark on social media, print materials, banners, merchandise, e-mail signatures, web footers, and more. Other anniversaries (e.g. 20th, 40th, etc.) that do not warrant an official anniversary mark may be acknowledged in text format (e.g. “The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s School of _____ is celebrating 20 years!”).
How should I use an anniversary mark with UAB’s logo?
Anniversary marks should always be used with UAB’s main brand identity and should be secondary to UAB’s logo. The unit’s established date should be featured in the mark’s bottom banner. Contact

Logo White Space
The importance of clear space around brand elements and throughout all layouts cannot be overstated. The space adds confidence and clarity to the visual messaging. The more space, the better. The visuals below will help you define minimums.
Spacing for the Mark
The mark should be surrounded on all sides by clear space, no less than ¼ inch on all sides. Do not print graphics, rules, typography, or other elements in this area.
Minimum Size
The preferred mark is the hield with the established date, but in some instances, the mark will need to be much smaller. The shield with only the number 50 (no established date) may be used in these cases. The mark can be reduced to 18px by 18px. In print and other use cases it’s recommended that the size not to be reduced below 1/2-inch.

Athletics Logos
Blaze, UAB athletics monogram with flames, and Blazer logos are registered trademarks designed for use by the UAB Athletic Department. These logos are not intended to appear with, or replace, the full UAB logo.
Internal units are encouraged to show their school spirit and support UAB athletics by utilizing the Blaze head logo as a secondary spirit mark (e.g. added to sleeve or nape of the neck on a unit polo). However, the Blaze head logo should not be the primary mark of units or locked up with unit names. Follow the link below to learn more and view examples.
If you’re uncertain about how to utilize athletics logos, please contact
