In the decisive year of 1963, the citizens of Birmingham took giant steps toward ending a centuries-long struggle for freedom. Their strong, courageous actions set the United States on a more equal path and inspired the world. Now their historic contributions have inspired 50 Years Forward, a yearlong, citywide commemoration that highlights Birmingham’s crucial role in the U.S. Civil Rights Movement and its legacy to the future.
With its own history of service, excellence, diversity, and community involvement, UAB has partnered with the city of Birmingham to celebrate—and reflect upon—the events of 1963. Activities include performances, speakers, special academic courses and internship opportunities, among others.
