I grew up in Florida loving the outdoors and taking every opportunity to explore streams, rivers, beaches, and forests, searching for animals. As an undergraduate at Emory University in Atlanta, I discovered my passion for both biological psychology and vertebrate biology (especially salamanders). I decided that my graduate work should combine these fields, so my PhD research focused on social behavior of salamanders in Virginia, specifically kin recognition and mother-offspring interactions.
After earning my PhD, I became a professor at a small liberal arts college (Birmingham-Southern College), where I developed my love for teaching biology to undergraduate students and a humbling appreciation for Alabama’s biodiversity. I have taught a wide variety of biology courses and I have had the opportunity to accompany students on educational trips to Costa Rica, Honduras, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, Peru, Argentina, and New Zealand.
As a proud member of the UAB Biology Department, I look forward to continuing to develop my skills as a teacher and a life-long learner.
