Interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, biomedical research or science-related occupations? The Undergraduate Immunology Program is a good choice for you.
What Are My Possible Careers?
Immunology involves the study of the immune system and its role in health and disease. Therefore, majoring in Immunology is a logical choice if you are interested in:
- veterinary school
- medical technology
- public health
- optometry
- nursing
- dentistry
- medicine
The immune system extends throughout the body and interacts with all of the other organs, which means that having a background in immunology is relevant to a career in medicine. Medical specialties that rely on knowledge of the immune system are quite varied and include internal medicine, rheumatology, infectious diseases, allergy/asthma, oncology, neurology, cardiology, endocrinology, and transplantation, among others.
Where Would I Work?
Immunologists who are interested in biomedical research can pursue careers at medical centers, universities, and government laboratories or agencies, such as the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or the Food and Drug Administration. A strong background in immunology is also well suited to a career at a private research foundation or in industry, including pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or research technology companies. You may even decide to go global and pursue a career at the World Health Organization.
Upon graduation, you may decide to pursue a job immediately. If that is of interest, entry-level positions can be found in government, industry, or university settings working in research, marketing, or medical technology. Many careers, however, will involve advanced training in graduate school or one of the many professional schools — such as medical, veterinary, optometry, dental, public health, or nursing.
