Trailblazing Alumni CAS News January 15, 2015

Our graduates have experienced a lot of success in their post-graduation careers. Following are some of the highlights.

  • Lonnie Hannon’s (PhD 2007) book Life and Society was released by Cognella Academic Publishing in 2015. It addresses current social issues such as income inequality, social stratification, race relations, health disparities, and digital age functioning.
  • Lori Bateman (PhD 2014) was accepted as a Postdoctoral Scholar in the UAB School of Medicine, Division of Preventive Medicine.
  • Ronald Berkowsky (PhD 2014) was accepted as a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine.
  • LaToya O'Neal Coleman (PhD 2014) accepted a post-doctoral position at Michigan State University in the Department of Telecommunication, Information Studies, and Media.
  • Lynn Gerald (PhD 1997), who holds the Canyon Ranch Endowed Chair of the School at Public Health at the University of Arizona, has received an NIH Lifetime Achievement award.
  • Brian Hinote (PhD 2007) is a tenured Associate Professor in sociology at Middle Tennessee State University and co-editor of Sociological Spectrum.
  • Akilah Dulin Keita (PhD2007), Brown University Assistant Professor in the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences, received a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation's leading philanthropy on health and health care. She is among a select group of Junior Investigators to receive one of the 24-month grants from New Connections. It will allow Keita, who studies health disparities at the Brown Institute for Community Health Promotion, to examine the risk and protective factors for childhood obesity among Southeast Asians.
  • Xuanping Zhang (PhD 2002) is a Health Scientist at the CDC. His paper on diabetes (“A1C Level and Future Risk of Diabetes: A Systematic Review”) was cited in the Supreme Court’s 2012 decision regarding the legality of the Affordable Care Act.
