About

The 41st Juried Annual Student Exhibition — coordinated by the Department of Art & Art History (DAAH) and presented at the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts (AEIVA) galleries — includes student works selected by a professional artist (juror) and functions as an experiential learning opportunity for the students of the DAAH. The exhibition encourages students to develop a professional practice and provides an opportunity for students to interact with a larger art community. Entry deadline: February 17, 2017.

Venue

Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts, University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Juror: Jessica Angel

Jessica Angel is a Colombian artist living and working in New York. Her large-scale, site-specific installations aim to enable forms of collaboration among sciences, philosophy, music, art, and new media. Angel recently completed a Studios at MASS MoCA Artist Residency and a solo exhibition at the School of Visual Arts’ CP Projects Space in NYC. While living in New York City Jessica has been nominated for the World Technology Award in the Arts Category (2014), was awarded the Teaching-Artist Residency at the Cooper, and received the BRIC Media Arts Fellowship (2012). She participated in City Walls with the Brooklyn Arts Council (2010) and the BOFFO Artist in Residence (2009). She has exhibited solo at AC Institute, New York (2014) Juan Salas Gallery (2012), The Museum of Modern Art of Bucaramanga (2008), at the Salamanca University Cultural Center in Bogotá (2008), at The Project Room of Los Andes University in Bogota and at Casas Riegner Gallery (2006 and 2009). Her work has been exhibited both locally and abroad in cities like Bogota, New York, Miami, Washington, Albuquerque, Rosario, La Paz and Mexico. In 2007 she received an honorable mention at the 4th International Biennial SIART, Bolivia and at the 1st Drawing Biennial of the Americas, Mexico (2006).

Calendar

  • Call to artists: December 15, 2016
  • Shoot Your Art Workshop: February 13, 2017, 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. in Project Space
  • Deadline for Entries: Midnight, February 17, 2017
  • Notification (e-mail sent to all entries): March 3, 2017
  • Delivery of Work: March 22-23, 2017 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. at AEIVA. Your work must be ready to hang and you must fill out an incoming receipt upon drop-off. No exceptions.
  • Exhibition Dates: March 31 - April 14, 2017
  • Opening Reception & Award Ceremony: March 31, 2017, 6:00 - 8 p.m.
  • Pick-up of Work: April 15 and 17, 10:00 - 5:00 p.m. at AEIVA. You must fill out an outgoing receipt upon pick-up. No exceptions.

Awards

Awards will be announced at the exhibition opening reception.

Eligibility

  • Open to all students currently enrolled in courses in the DAAH.
  • Work must have been completed in the past two years.
  • Works not conforming to the submission will be rejected.

Liability

All reasonable care will be taken in the handling of the entries and selected works. All works are insured subject to the limitations, terms, and specifications of our insurance policy.

Entry Procedure

  • All materials must be submitted online via Slideroom (requires registration).
  • Digital images should be sent as JPGs, 72dpi, measure 1200 pixels on the longest side, and saved at “high” quality.
  • All image files must be named with artist’s Last name (underscore) First name, followed by (underscore) entry number (example: Lastname_Firstname_1.jpg).
  • Time-based work should be sent as .mpg or .mov files. Submitted work should not exceed three minutes total. Excerpts from longer pieces may be necessary.
  • All time-based media files must be named with artist’s last name (underscore) first name, followed by (underscore) entry number (example: Lastname_Firstname_1.mpeg).
  • DO NOT include any other information in the file name, such as title of work, etc.
  • All entries must follow the above guidelines or will not be accepted.

Assistance with Documenting Artwork

Assistance with documenting and formatting work will be available Feb. 13, 2017, 11:00 a.m. - 6 p.m. in Project Space on a first come, first serve basis. Please bring your own flash drive.
