Allyson Varley, a graduate student in the School of Public Health and research assistant to Department of Social Work Assistant Professor Laurel Hitchcock, PhD, took first place in the Business/Education section in the 2015 UAB Graduate Student Research Exchange.
Varley, who is a predoctoral fellow at the Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and Education (COERE), won the prize with a poster titled “Learning About Poverty in a Team-based Simulation.”
The poster presented the results of a pilot study that evaluated the effectiveness of poverty simulations on students’ understanding and ability to empathize with the common challenges faced by people living in poverty.
Varley has worked for the past two years as a research assistant to Dr. Hitchcock, the principal investigator of the study, which has grown to be a collaboration between the Department of Social Work, School of Nursing and Office of Interprofessional Simulations.
