Cristin Gavin, Ph.D., has been named as a Co-Director of the UAB Undergraduate Neuroscience Program.

Gavin, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurobiology and Co-Director of the UAB Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP), teaches for the Undergraduate Neuroscience Program, Science and Technology Honors Program, and the Graduate School.

"I am pleased to announce that Dr. Cristin Gavin, Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurobiology, has been appointed as a Co-Director for the Undergraduate Neuroscience Program," said program director and Department of Neurobiology Associate Professor Scott Wilson, Ph.D. "Dr. Gavin has played a critical role in the UNP for several years and will continue to provide outstanding guidance and leadership for the Undergraduate Neuroscience Program students. Her passion and endless energy for the Undergraduate Neuroscience Program will undoubtedly help make it the best neuroscience major in the country."

Established in 2008, the UAB Undergraduate Neuroscience Program is an interdisciplinary program between the Department of Neurobiology in the School of Medicine and the Department of Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Gavin will join program Co-Directors Rajesh Kana, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology; David Knight, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology; and Anne Theibert, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Neurobiology.

She has worked in the Undergraduate Neuroscience Program since 2014, when she was introduced to the program by her postdoctoral mentor J. David Sweatt, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Neurobiology.

"Cristin has an outstanding background in cutting-edge neuroscience research," said Sweatt. "As a scientist she has made important discoveries concerning the molecular basis of how memories are formed and stored. Cristin is using that exceptional strength in the molecular and cellular neurosciences to help train the next generation of neurobiologists in the UNP here at UAB. Her academic pedigree, scientific contributions, and exceptional commitment to undergraduate teaching and mentoring make her an exceptional resource for both our students and our faculty members."
