Dr. Richard Dluhy has been named the new Chair of the College of Arts and Sciences Department of Chemistry.

Dr. Richard DluhyDr. Dluhy comes to UAB from the University of Georgia, where he was a Professor in the Department of Chemistry. After completing his B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Connecticut in 1976, he worked as a research scientist at Hoffman-LaRoche and as a chemist at GAF Corporation before returning to academics to receive his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Rutgers University in 1983.

After completing his doctoral degree, Dr. Dluhy went on to conduct post-doctoral research at the Canadian National Research Council’s Division of Chemistry (1982-84). He served as a scientist in the Department of Chemistry at Battelle Memorial Institute (1984-88), and as a senior research scientist in the Chemical Methods Development Department at Battelle Memorial Institute (1998-1990).

In 1990, Dr. Dluhy joined the faculty at the University of Georgia, taking a position as Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry. At Georgia, he rose through the ranks and was promoted to full professor in 1996. In addition to his faculty responsibilities, Dr. Dluhy served as the associate department head from 1996-2003 and as the graduate coordinator for the Chemistry Department from 2004-2008. He has directed the Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center (NanoSEC) for the Office of the Vice President for Research at the University of Georgia and is Co-Founder and President of Argent Diagnostics, Inc.

Dr. Dluhy has held numerous international appointments, including visiting professorships at the Centre de Physique Moléculaire Optique et Hertzienne, Université Bordeaux in Bordeaux, France and at the Max Planck Institut für Kolloid und Grenzflächenforshung in Potsdam, Germany. His research interests are in the application of nanoscience and nanotechnology to bioanalytical problems, and exploring new developments in surface chemistry using sophisticated surface spectroscopic methods. In the classroom, his teaching focuses on quantitative analysis and analytical chemistry, undergraduate and graduate-level instrumental analysis and spectroscopy, biophysical chemistry, nanoscience, and biomedicine. He is widely published, with more than 130 publications and nearly 140 presentations at scientific meetings. He has also presented more than 100 lectures at national and international conferences. Dr. Dluhy is a prolific researcher with many years of success in securing federal funding from the NIH, NSF, the U.S. Department of Defense and the Georgia Research Council, among many others, to support his work.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Dluhy has served on many academic committees and has been a member of a number of professional societies, including the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences and the American Chemical Society. He has participated in a number of academic advisory committees for the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the National Science Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

"Dr. Dluhy's leadership experience, research success, international connections and mentoring of students will be a tremendous asset as we grow the Department of Chemistry," says Dean Robert Palazzo. "In addition, his particular area of expertise is one that will enhance the already-good work being done in our department. We are excited to have him join our team."
