CAS fun facts What do a lion trainer, three Rhodes Scholars, a space archaeologist, a former White House photo editor, country music star Sam Hunt, and Carl Sagan's architect have in common?

They are all faculty, staff, students, or alumni of the UAB College of Arts and Sciences.

We knew that the College was a unique place when we began our search for some fun, quirky facts for a short video. But when we began digging around, we came across some interesting tidbits about the people who make up the College.

Here are just a few:

  • Assistant Professor of Theatre Lee Shackelford wrote for "Star Trek: The Next Generation"
  • Professor Larry Delucas flew aboard the space shuttle Columbia in 1992
  • A couple of places in Antarctica are named after UAB faculty, who are frequent visitors to the continent
  • Many of Birmingham's food and beverage superstars are College alumni: Idie Hastings of Hot and Hot Fish Club, Maureen Holt of Little Savannah, and Eric Meyer of Cahaba Brewing

Check out the video our Digital Media team produced for more fun facts about the college:

Samantha Richardson, a sophomore majoring in studio art, was the student producer for this College of Arts and Sciences and Digital Media project.
