ABSTRACT

Cybercrime takes many forms and continues to evolve with technology.  Every year a billion Internet users connect online to risk becoming victimized by strangers, or by people they have “friended” or otherwise thought they really knew and trusted.   Cyber bullying is an infamous form of cyber abuse commonly experienced by young users and now criminalized in many states.   Social media presents unprecedented opportunities for committing and preventing cyber bullying.   This presentation describes cyber bullying now taking place in schools, college campuses and communities throughout the country.

BIOGRAPHY

Samuel C. McQuade III, Ph.D. is Director of the MS in Professional Studies Program at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). A former National Institute of Justice Program Manager and Study Director for the Committee on Law and Justice at the National Research Council, he earned his Ph.D. in Public Policy from the George Mason University. Dr. Mc-Quade has served on the Online Safety Technology Working Group of the National Technology and Information Administration (NITA). During 2010-2012, he designed and supervised professional development training for education officials in how to design and teach cybercrime curricula, courses, and prevention policies in K-12 schools. His research has been funded by the State of New York, the Internet Safety Coalition, and the U.S. Department of Justice, and presented at events hosted by, among other agencies, the Department of Homeland Security; the National Intelligence Council; the National Governors Association; the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School; and dozens of school districts throughout the State of New York. His work has also been featured in stories about youth cybercrime and online victimization by the Wall Street Journal, ABC News, and the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). His recent books include: Understanding and Managing Cybercrime;The Encyclopedia of Cybercrime and Cyber Bullying;Living with the Internet; Cyber Stalking and Cyber Bullying, and Internet Addiction and Online Gaming. He is co-authoring the forthcoming Handbook on Cyber Bullyingand Online and Electronic Gaming: Fun, Abuse, Crime and Addiction, and editing the forthcoming five-volume World of Cybercrime: Issues, Cases and Responses.
