Dr. John Sloan, Director
Dr. John Sloan, Chair of Justice Sciences and Co-Founder and Co-Director of CIA-JFR, has been named the new director of the Center. Dr. Sloan will report jointly to Dr. Robert E. Palazzo, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and to Dr. Richard Marchase, Vice President for Research and Economic Development. As director, Dr. Sloan will oversee the staff of the Center, will be responsible for growing its mission and purpose, will seek external funding through grant submissions and corporate foundation relations, and will manage the its day-to-day operations.Dr. Sloan graduated with a B.S. in criminal justice and an M.S. in criminal justice from Eastern Michigan University in 1980 and 1982, respectively. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology from Purdue University in 1987 and joined the UAB faculty in 1988. In addition to his role as chair, Dr. Sloan is also a professor of criminal justice and holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Sociology.
His research has focused on crime and security issues on college and university campuses; fear and perceived risk of victimization; criminal justice policy; and specialized police agencies. His work has been funded by the National Institute of Justice, the Bureau of Justice Assistance, and the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), and by state and local agencies in Alabama. He has published in such journals as Criminology, Justice Quarterly, Social Forces, and Crime and Delinquency.
His most recent book (with Bonnie S. Fisher) is Campus Crime: Legal, Social, and Policy Perspectives, 3rd ed. (Charles C. Thomas, 2013).
Dr. Purushotham Bangalore, Assistant Director
Dr. Purushotham Bangalore, Associate Professor of Computer and Information Sciences, has been named Assistant Director for the Center.He graduated with a B.E. in computer science and engineering from Bangalore University, India in 1991. He received his M.S. in Computer Science from Mississippi State University in 1995 and his Ph.D., also from Mississippi State, in Computational Engineering in 2003. He joined the faculty in the Computer and Information Sciences Department at UAB in 2003.
Dr. Bangalore’s research interests include two primary areas: grid computing (computational portals, integration frameworks for multidisciplinary applications, programming environments, adaptive systems, and applications) and high performance computing (scalable algorithms, object-oriented numerical libraries and middleware, performance evaluation and estimation, and scientific computing).
His most recent publications have appeared in The Journal of Supercomputing and his teaching has focused on object-oriented programming and design, operating system fundamentals, and distributed computing.
