News updates from the Department of Mathematics for the year 2011.
- Proffesor Yoshimi Saito, who retired September 1, was appointed Professor Emeritus by the Board of Trustees.
- Fast-track student Ethan Mallick Hossain was named Mr. UAB.
- The paper Complete asymptotic expansion of the integrated density of states of multidimensional almost-periodic Schrödinger operators by Dr. Roman Shterenberg and Dr. Leonid Parnovski (University College London) was accepted for publication by the Annals of Mathematics, regarded by many as the most prestigious mathematics journal. Congratulations!
- On August 16 fast-track student Zachariah Ingram gave a presentation on Isoperimetric inequalities on bounded plane domains at the Alabama School of Math and Science, of which he is an alumnus.
- Dr. Paul Jung joined the Faculty as an Assistant Professor on August 15. Dr. Jung is an expert in probability theory and statistical mechanics. He received his degree in 2003 from the University of California, Los Angeles under the direction of Thomas Liggett. He then spent four years at Cornell University, two years as a researcher at the investment firm Susquehanna International Group, and two years as Assistant Professor at Sogang University in Seoul, South Korea, before coming to UAB.
- Ali Al-Sharadqah accepted a Visiting Assistant Professor position at the University of Mississippi.
- Prof. Gunter Stolz recently won an individual research grant from NSF.
- Miriam Hood is the recipient of the 2011-2012 Warner Scholarship.
- Lindsay Tidmore and Brittney Gilbert each were awarded a 2011-2012 Travis Wood Memorial Scholarship.
- Rhiannon Johns received the 2011-2012 O'Neil Scholarship.
- Ph.D. student Kendrick White and Mathematics Major Deonnia Pompey each won a first place for a poster at the LSAMP Research Conference held in Montgomery in April.
- Fast-track student Ethan Mallick Hossain has won a prestigious Goldwater scholarship. Nationwide 275 scholarships were awarded.
- Ali Al-Sharadqah, Elizabeth Scribner, and Catherine Case were chosen as the Outstanding Ph.D. Student, the Outstanding Master's Student, and the Outstanding Undergraduate Student, respectively.
- Fast-track student Joseph Olson has been awarded the highly prestigious DAAD-RISE scholarship to attend the Max Planck Institute in Jena, Germany, this summer to study hybrid solar cells.
- Ph.D. student Kendrick White won a third place at the 2011 Graduate Student Research Days.
- Fast-track student Ethan Mallick Hossain and the UAB Bioethics Bowl team won the 2011 National Undergraduate Bioethics Conference at Duke University on March 20.
- Proffesor Nikolai Chernov won one of the eight 2011 Graduate Dean's Excellence in Mentorship Awards.
- In February Laura Stansell received the Disability Support Services Staff Recognition Award for Fall 2010.
