The University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Music will hold its second annual UAB Piano Day on May 9.
All events are free and open to the public.
A master class by UAB professor and international piano competitions prize winner Dr. Yakov Kasman will be held at 10:00 a.m. in the Reynolds-Kirschbaum Recital Hall at the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center.
All pre-college students of intermediate and advanced levels are invited to participate. Please prepare one piece of any style.
The Festival of Polyphonic Music “Bach and Friends” will begin at 2:00 p.m. in Reynolds-Kirschbaum Hall.
Participation in the "Bach and Friends" program is open for any pre-college students of all ages and levels, as well as for any piano teachers.
Please prepare one memorized piece written in polyphonic style (two or more simultaneous lines of independent melody). Example: J.S. Bach's Canon, Minuet, Little Prelude, Fugetta, Invention, Prelude and Fugue, Fantasia, parts of French and English Suites and Partitas, etc. Works written in polyphonic style by any other composers are acceptable. Example: Handel - “Allemande”, Grieg - “Canon”, Shostakovich - “Prelude and Fugue”, etc. Virtuosic transcriptions are acceptable. Example: Bach-Busoni, Bach-Rachmaninoff, etc.
