UAB Department of Social Work students recently sponsored a baby shower for a couple facing HIV and cancer.

The students, including members of the Student Social Work Organization and students in SW 428: Medical and Mental Health Social Work, partnered with the community to provide gifts for the parents.

Every semester, Wes Akins, an adjunct instructor the Department of Social Work and a social worker in UAB Medicine's Division of Infectious Diseases, leads his students in working with community groups to help meet the needs of an individual, family, or group.

"This experience allows the students to see the importance of building partnerships in the community," Akins said. "I want to demonstrate to the students what can be done through a united group effort."

Previously, the students have raised supplies for children in foster care and have furnished a room at the Wellhouse, a nonprofit organization that assists victims of human trafficking.
