On Valentine's Day, social work students served a meal at First Light shelter in Birmingham. Students in Dr. Moak's Human Behavior in the Social Environment class partnered with other community members to provide a meal. Our portion of the meal included drinks and desserts. Four students, along with Dr. Moak from Social Work and Dr. Walker from Criminal Justice, were on hand to serve the meal and mingle with the women and children.

One student stated, "I heard their stories and found out that it's not that the ladies are not trying to do better. Many of them were doing fine and then something happened and all of a sudden their lives were changed." Students reflected that most of the ladies are really not very different from anyone else they know. Overall, students had a positive reaction to donating items, and spending time with those in need. Students stated that they intend to volunteer again in the future.
