Throughout Summer 2024, faculty, staff, and students across the College of Arts and Sciences facilitated camps and on-campus experiences for middle school, high school, and college students.
The College’s communications team attended several of these events and captured some stunning photos along the way. Here are a few favorites:
STARTALK Chinese Camp
Students celebrating the grand finale of the STARTALK Chinese Camp at UAB. For the finale, campers dressed in traditional Chinese clothing, showcased their language projects, recited Chinese poetry, sang songs in Mandarin, and performed various cultural dances.
Research Experiences for Undergraduates
The Department of Physics and the Center for Nanoscale Materials and Biointegration hosted their National Science Foundation – Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program (REU). From May 19 to July 26, student participants from across the country conducted over 400 hours of research on campus with UAB faculty mentors. In this photo, Charita Cadenhead, Program Coordinator for the Center for Nanoscale Materials and Biointegration, is leading an orientation for the participants.
Symphonic Band Camp
The Department of Music hosted its Symphonic Band Camp for rising 7th - 12th graders. Campers had opportunities to play in a full band and small ensembles. In addition, students trained with UAB Music faculty in music theory, literature, conducting, music technology, and jazz improvisation.
Ada Long Creative Writing Workshop
The Ada Long Creative Writing Workshop is a summer day camp for rising 9th - 12th grade students. This summer, students participated in activities across campus and the city of Birmingham. In this shot, students are receiving a writing prompt at the Spencer Honors House.
Camp CSI
The J. Frank Barefield, Jr. Department of Criminal Justice hosted Camp CSI for high school students. During camp, students received hands-on training in collecting evidence, dusting for fingerprints, searching for blood stains, analyzing DNA evidence, and more.
ChemBridge
Rising ninth graders in the ChemBridge summer program — a partnership of the Department of Chemistry and the Center for Community Outreach Development — tested to see who could launch the highest water rocket on the Campus Green. Corey Burns, Ph.D., instructor in the Department of Chemistry, led the activity.
