The College of Arts and Sciences is pleased to announce that Dr. Timothy Levine has accepted the position as Chair of the Department of Communication Studies.

Tim LevineDr. Levine has most recently served as Professor of Communication and Media at Korea University. There, his research and instructional focus has been on interpersonal communication, persuasion and social influence, cross-cultural communication, and social scientific research methods. He brings a wealth and breadth of experience in teaching and research in the field of Communication Studies.

He has held faculty appointments at Michigan State University, Indiana University, and the University of Hawaii. Levine is an exceptional scholar with significant research contributions published in a wide variety of refereed journals. His work includes articles on the field of deception, deception detection, and credibility assessment. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the US Department of Defense, and the FBI. His current work focuses on effective interrogation strategies and the believability of individuals. He has extended his academic knowledge to the private and public sectors as a trainer of law enforcement officers, attorneys, and people in the intelligence and counterintelligence communities.

Levine graduated with a BS in Psychology in 1985 from Northern Arizona University. He received his MA in Communication Studies from West Virginia University in 1986 and his PhD in Communications from Michigan State University in 1992. He has taught courses at every level and has been a prolific writer and sought-after editor throughout his career. Most recently, he has edited The Encyclopedia of Deception, Vol. 1 & 2 (Sage, 2014) and co-edited the September 2014 special issue of the Journal of Language and Social Psychology on advances in deception theory.

He has received numerous awards, including the Distinguished Faculty Award from Michigan State University in 2011, and several Distinguished Article Awards from the National Communication Association.
