Dr. Kempin Reuter comes to UAB from the Reiff Center for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution at Christopher Newport University in Virginia, where she has been the Director since 2013. She has also been an Associate Professor in the Department of Government at Christopher Newport since 2012.Dr. Kempin Reuter is a Senior Faculty Associate and Senior Researcher at the Center for Research on Collaboratories and Technology Enhanced Learning Communities (COTELCO) at American University and Syracuse University. She was a Visiting Research Scholar and Fellow at the Solomon Asch Center for Study of Ethnopolitical Conflict at the University of Pennsylvania, a Research Fellow and Instructor at the University of Zurich Law School, and a Research and Teaching Assistant at the Center for Security Studies and Conflict Research at the Swiss Federal Institute for Technology.
Dr. Kempin Reuter received her Ph.D. in International Relations and International Law from the University of Zurich in 2006, graduating magna cum laude. She received her M.A. in contemporary history (conflict and peace research), economic policy and international law from the University of Zurich in 2002. She is widely published, including edited books and monographs, peer-reviewed articles, textbook contributions and book reviews. She has published a number of opinion and editorial pieces and has made numerous presentations on peace studies, conflict resolution, human rights and international law.
Dr. Kempin Reuter has received a number of grants and awards and has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in the U.S. and in Europe. She has been extremely active within her university communities, serving on numerous committees and task forces. She is a native of Switzerland and speaks four languages proficiently, with familiarity with two additional languages. She is a member of the American Society for International Law, the European Society for International Law, the American Political Science Association, the International Studies Association and the Hampton Roads World Affairs Council.
“We are fortunate to have Dr. Kempin Reuter join us as we launch operations for the UAB Institute for Human Rights,” says Dr. Robert Palazzo, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “The combination of her scholarship in international law and peace studies, her international experience and perspective, her detailed knowledge and experience with international organizations involved in human rights deliberations, together with her administrative skill and understanding of university operations will enable her to move the Institute for Human Rights to international prominence in a short time. In addition, her commitment to undergraduate and graduate education and her history of teaching excellence will make her a welcome addition to our professoriate. We are indeed fortunate to have her join the UAB College of Arts and Sciences.”
Dr. Reuter will be on campus in mid-February.
