High school students spend three weeks at the Ada Long Creative Writing Workshop

Professor Ada Long. Dr. Ada LongMore than two dozen area high school students recently participated in The Ada Long Creative Writing Workshop, hosted by the Department of English. Students competed for the spots and were chosen by application in the spring; their recognition ceremony will be held on Friday, June 20 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Spencer Honors House.

The workshop is named in honor of Dr. Ada Long, founding director of the UAB Honors Program, professor of English, and longtime community servant. The students, rising sophomores, juniors, or seniors, submitted a three-to-five page writing sample with their application. Those chosen spent three weeks with Department of English faculty in directed writing exercises, small group writing workshops, one-on-one conferences, at readings by faculty and visiting authors, and on field trips to local historic and cultural sites.

At the reception, four students will read samples of what they wrote during the workshop. All participating students will receive a gift from the English Department.
