UAB Professor Pamela Sterne King tells the story of one of Birmingham's oldest neighborhoods, Fountain Heights, through historic preservation.
Fountain Heights nestles between Interstates 65 and 59, only a few blocks northwest of Kelly Ingram Park, the 16th Street Baptist Church, and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. The earliest houses were built in the 1880s and 1890s by Jewish, middle-class residents, and by the 1940s Fountain Heights began to transition to an African American neighborhood
While many have written off this neighborhood as "lost," Pamela Sterne King saw many architectural jewels in the historic neighborhood. She received a $5,000 grant from Operation New Birmingham (now REV Birmingham) to research 200 buildings in the Fountain Heights community. UABNews caught up with her to learn more about the project.
