Doug Barrett, associate professor of graphic design in the Department of Art and Art History, is the recipient of the 2016 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Barrett received his BFA in graphic design from the University of Central Florida in 1986 and after a long and successful career in advertising, Barrett completed his MFA in graphic design from the University of Florida in 2007. He joined the UAB faculty in 2008 and as part of his leadership, has developed the Bloom Studio program and has led his students to numerous awards and recognitions.

Dr. Alison Chapman, professor and chair of the Department of English, is the recipient of the Odessa Woolfolk Community Service Award. Chapman received her B.A. from Davidson College and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. She is the latest recipient of the award that recognizes faculty members who have rendered outstanding service to the UAB community. It is named for Odessa Woolfolk, a longtime Birmingham educator and civic activist.
