Scott Batey, Mary Jacque Carroll, Laurel Hitchcock, Yookyong Lee, David Pollio, and Chris Walker participated in the Council on Social Work Education’s Annual Program Meeting, the preeminent meeting for social work educators, students, deans, and directors worldwide. The 63rd Annual Program Meeting was held in Dallas, Texas, and professors gave talks and presentations and attended workshops. This year’s theme was “Education for the Social Work Grand Challenges,” which are: (1) Ensure healthy development for all youths; (2) close the health gap; (3) Stop family violence; (4) Advance long and productive lives; (5) Eradicate social isolation; (6) End homelessness; (7) Create social responses to changing environment; (8) Harness technology for social good; (9) Promote smart decarceration; (10) Build financial capability for all; (11) Reduce extreme economic inequality; and (12) Achieve equal opportunity and justice.

Laurel Hitchcock with other UAB faculty member in front of poster presentation.Dr. Laurel Hitchcock won a community engagement planning grant to create more policy-based learning opportunities for BSW students at UAB and was recognized at the presentation. Dr. Hitchcock gave three more presentations at the 63rd annual meeting of Council on Social Work Education: (1) Pioneering the grand challenges on social media as macro practice; (2) Lessons learned from MH/HS trainings; and (3) Harnessing technology for our own good: Professional learning networks in social work (learn more about this presentation).
