Frederick Stephens, a junior chemistry major from Huntsville, was awarded with the American Chemical Society (ACS) Scholarship for the 2015-2016 academic year.

ACS awards renewable scholarships to underrepresented minority students interested in chemistry or chemistry-related fields.

“The chemistry department really pushes you,” Stephens says. “UAB makes thinkers. They don’t teach you to regurgitate information. They teach you to think on your own and figure out what it is that you want and how to get there.”

Stephens was selected based on merit, career objective, leadership, community service and participation in school activities.

He is a UAB Chemistry Scholar, an ROTC Air Force Cadet, and a member of the UAB Sci Tech Honors program. Under Dr. Pengfei Wang, he works as an undergraduate researcher investigating linkers for photosensitive polymers.

“Earning the ACS scholarship really sets me up for my career,” says Stephens. “I feel it distinguishes me and sets me apart as an ideal candidate for the Air Force Medical fastrack program.”
