Student Achievement CAS News October 14, 2015

zlindsey labZachary R. Lindsey, a doctoral student in physics, has been awarded a GRSP fellowship for 2015-2016 through the Alabama EPSCoR Graduate Research Scholars Program. The awarding of the fellowship is based on the merits of a research proposal submitted by each applicant.

Zach’s research focuses on the deposition of zinc selenide (ZnSe) thin films of both n-type andp-type conductivity by incorporating the appropriate dopants such as Cl and N using pulsed laser deposition. In order to achieve a novel structure, these materials are deposited with ZnSe doped with Cr2+ which provides excitation in the mid-infrared. Armed with the knowledge of the dopant concentration via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and dopant profile via atom probe analysis, the overarching goal of his research is to create a mid-infrared laser source from a multilayered structure of these ZnSe films. This research is being performed under the guidance of Professor Renato Camata as part of the UAB Center for Optical Sensors and Spectroscopies’ research mission. .
