Stephanie Qualls has always had a love for history, which is why she wants to teach others about our world and its cultures. “[Studying] history . . . will essentially help shape who we become in the future,” she says about her choice to double major in history and secondary education.

Stephanie Qualls. Although her curriculum centers on teaching history, Stephanie ventured outside those interests and took a Public History class taught by Professor Pam King — and it sparked Stephanie’s interest in the realm of historical preservation. That class gave her the opportunity to further her experience in the realm of public history through an internship with REV Birmingham, a non-profit organization based downtown that focuses on strengthening and reviving the economic and cultural sectors of the city. It serves as a community partner for businesses and as a catalyst for local causes and city growth.

Stephanie will be documenting and cataloging buildings along the historic downtown streets of Morris Avenue and 1st Avenue North. She will gain first-hand experience in the city’s revitalization by walking the blocks and interacting with the tenants of each building.

This is Stephanie’s first exposure to the work of public history outside of the classroom and she is excited to “play a role in the growing of Birmingham, especially if it includes working with the restoration some of Birmingham’s most beautiful, historical buildings.” She sees this opportunity as the internship’s biggest challenge and reward. With so many buildings along the two avenues, there is much work to be done — but she is looking forward to meeting the tenants and establishing valuable connections in the community while at REV Birmingham.

Stephanie began her internship in September and will continue throughout the fall semester. Although she is still new to REV, she has already connected her work there with career potential and the possibility of a working in a field she never considered until now. Not only will Stephanie be academically equipped to pursue a history-related career, but she will also bring valuable experience to her career and community.
