Hunter Weber, a Biology major on the UAB Men’s Soccer Team, has been named an SAAC Star by the UAB Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). He was also one of the fourteen honorees for the 2014 Fall Conference USA Spirit of Service award.

Being a SAAC Representative is important to Weber because it allows him to represent the team in a whole different way off the field, by encouraging his teammates to give back to the community and connecting them to volunteer opportunities.

According to Weber, being a Division I athlete means a lot more than just going on the field or court and playing a sport. “Not many people get to do what we do, so we shouldn’t take it for granted. We get to play the sport we love but we can also change people’s lives outside of the sport because so many people look up to us. ”

Hunter’s most beneficial classes at UAB have been Biology 123 and Biology 124 (Introductory Biology I and II). They were two of the hardest classes he has ever taken, mainly because the professor, Dr. Anne Cusic, challenges her students to do their best. Weber loved these classes because they were taught in an entertaining fashion and because it was clear that Dr. Cusic has a passion for the subject. After taking her class and surviving, he found himself more than prepared for advanced Biology classes. Dr. Cusic is now Hunter’s favorite professor at UAB.

His favorite spot in Birmingham is definitely Gus’ Hot Dogs. It’s a hole-in-the wall hot dog joint in Northside that is almost impossible to find. “Nothing beats going to Gus’ on a nice day, getting 2 or 3 amazing hot dogs, and sitting outside on the curb eating them while enjoying downtown Birmingham.”
