The UAB Mock Trial Team has been busy practicing for the 2015 American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) Regional Competition later this month.

On November 22-23, 2014, the team competed at Rhodes College in an informal scrimmage involving 12 teams from across the southeast. The team went 5-2-1 and placed fifth at the scrimmage. Chellie Letson, a junior majoring in criminal justice and purusing a minor in legal affairs, won an individual award for her performance at the scrimmage.

On January 24-25, 2015, the team traveled to Atlanta to compete at Georgia Tech’s Ramblin’ Wreck Invitational Tournament. The team went 4-4, and Letson again won an individual award — her third straight. The team now moves on to compete at the AMTA-sanctioned Regional Tournament in Jackson, Mississippi, on February 20-22.

Letson earned her associate’s degree in paralegal studies and worked as a paralegal before deciding to continue her education at UAB. On her first day she saw a flier advertising a recruiting meeting for the Mock Trial team. Given her interest in law and her background in acting (she has performed in several plays and musicals), she went to the meeting and tried out for the team. She earned a place on the Green Team as a witness, and has won a "Best Witness" award at all three tournaments the team has competed in during the 2014-2015 season.UAB Mock Trial Team 2014-2015.
