Student Achievement CAS News January 08, 2015

Over the Fall 2014 semester, students wrote memoirs and then filmed their stories for the interdisciplinary class “Memoir in Writing and Film,” taught by Kerry Madden of English and Michele Forman of the History Department.

Fourteen student-created short films can be seen on the UAB Media Studies Program Vimeo page.

The films include:
  • “Requiem” by Ty Harris — A realization of purpose, a moment of risk, journey of the unknown through a camera lens.
  • Image from "The Pits of Peach Town" by Jennie Tippett.“The Pits of Peach Town” by Jennie Tippett — Exploring family origins in Clanton, Alabama through photographs and family reunions.
  • “Son” by Derek Holmes — Derek is a film theory and philosophy student who is beyond ready to finish school. He needs little more in life than good food, good movies, and the ability to travel. He lives in Highland with his girlfriend, Kelsey and his two cats, Dorito and Yayoi. This is his first film.
  • “Palimpsest” by Holly Watson — My journey to discover the meaning of my memories and relationship with my father.
  • “Self-Portrait” by Jessica Chriesman — An introspection on the past, the future, and the self.
  • Image from "Snow Road" by Nichele Cantrell. “Snow Road” by Nichele Cantrell — When witches, princesses, and mythological creatures are your inspiration you should be a writer. Unless you’re delusional, then you'll convince yourself to be an engineer. This is the story of that delusion, of constantly falling on a road that was never meant for you.
  • “Hanukkah in Prattville” by Zoe Zaslawsky — Being a secular Jew in in the small town of Prattville, Alabama as a child meant a shaky sense of identity, an intense envy of Christmas, and an ego-boost as the special character in a sea of Baptists and WASPs.
  • “Roads to Family” by Malia Cole — Malia border-line lives in cars and just about any other type of vehicle. That's where does her thinking, dreaming, and living.
  • “Planned Parenthood” by Steve Irvine — My life as a husband and father and our adoption journey. Learning to accept that God's plan is better than my own.
  • Image from "Lemon-Squeezed Roller Skates in Heaven" by Caitlin Jackson.“Lemon-Squeezed Roller Skates in Heaven” by Caitlin Jackson — The journey with losing Velma Carlene Sherlin and discovering that she is not that hard to find. Romance and remembrance, a shadow, a memory, and a legacy.
  • “Coming & Going” by Kelsey Grace Harrison — Kelsey is an English Senior at UAB. "I love my camera and my mom."
  • “The Life of Mary Jean Rowell” by Mary Doss — Mary's life as an avid reader: "My life as an avid reader became the breath I breathe beginning as a writer. Sitting alone on the steps as a little girl reading consumed my thoughts. Today, writing consumes my thinking because reading has prepared me for my life as a writer."
  • “The Old and Haunted South” by Brian Renninger — The pull between spiritualism and biological understanding in the mind of a southern boy.
  • “The Beginning” by Katy Joy Vaughan — Katy Joy is a sophomore studying Social Justice and Media. She loves to volunteer, and is involved with organizations such as Free Food for Thought and Safezone. This is her second short film she's made at UAB.
