On June 29th, the CCTS, the UAB Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Center, and UAB Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and Education, will conduct a mock NIH study section, the traditional closing event of the CCTS Clinical and Translational Science Training Program (CTSTP). By popular demand, section experts will review a Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award (K23).
Though a mock review, the study section will use a real K23 application that was submitted, not funded, resubmitted, and then successfully funded. The reviewers will explore what an NIH study section actually considers when critiquing a K23 application for scientific merit, including key elements of a successful K23 application and issues that might hurt an applicant’s chance of being funded. Attendees are strongly encouraged to watch the NIH video “NIH Peer Review Revealed” as a primer on the basic processes involved in a review.
This year’s reviewers represent several scientific disciplines, including microbiology (Dr. David Chaplin), psychology/behavioral neurobiology (Dr. Karen Cropsey), preventive medicine (Dr. Gareth Dutton), developmental & integrative biology (Dr. Peter Smith), and postdoctoral education (Dr. Lisa Schwiebert).
Registration is required, and seats fill fast. GoToMeeting access will be provided to those unable to participate in person. Registered attendees will receive a copy of the application to review prior to the event.
