The CCTS may submit only one application. Recognizing potential for scientific synergy, we encourage you to submit either a new project idea or an idea that extends an existing project. Bring your questions and concerns as we explore the nuances of the critical mentor-mentee relationship in our popular Case Studies in Mentoring series, which re-launches on Wednesday, April 10, 2019. Investigators, scholars, and trainees from across the CCTS Partner Network are invited to attend any of the eight topics via Zoom. For those who prefer a more informal setting to discuss mentoring issues, join us for our CCTS Friday Mentoring Lunch on April 19, 12:00 noon-1pm (please register by Tuesday, April 16).

First time was indeed the charm for our inaugural training symposium, held February 20-21, 2019, in conjunction with the Southern Society of Clinical Investigation annual regional meeting in New Orleans. More than 85 predoctoral, postdoctoral, early career scholars, and senior faculty from 12 institutions and community agencies across the CCTS Partner Network gathered at the Intercontinental Hotel to sharpen their skills, expand their translational thinking, and connect with new friends and future collaborators.

Cohosted by CCTS Partners Tuskegee University and UAB, this event brings together researchers and bioethicists to discuss special challenges in population-based genetic and genomic research. This year's event will focus on ethical issues around the return of results to research participants. Our expert speakers, including Drs. Stephen Olufemi Sodeke, Bruce R. Korf, Mariko Nakano, and Adolfo Correa, will share lessons learned from the Alabama Genomic Health Initiative and the Jackson Heart Study. Medical Towers Room 634, 8:30am-1pm. Drop-ins welcome.

Syracuse University Senior Associate Vice President for Content Strategy Ellen de Graffenreid recently joined our CCTS Training Interdisciplinary Emerging Research Scholars (TIERS) to present a workshop on "Meet the Press: Stress-free Media Relations for Scholars." We summarize this communication guru's top tips for reducing anxiety and acing an interview with a reporter.

Open to investigators across the CCTS Partner Network, this program seeks to encourage and enhance imaging research, offering up to $5,000 to offset expenses for development time on CT scanners, MRI scanners, PET/MR, PET/CT, Small Animal Imaging modalities (e.g., 9.4T MRI, Small Animal PET/CT, etc.), limited radiotracers, and associated radiology personnel fees.

If you mentor K and/or T scholars or you are a graduate student, postdoc, or early career stage investigator working in clinical or translational research, do not miss our next CCTS Monthly Forum, which takes place Wednesday, March 13, 4-5:30pm. Dr. Joel Tsevat, Director of the Institutional Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) KL2 program at The University of Texas (UT) Health Science Center, Director of the Center for Research to Advance Community Health (ReACH), and Professor of Population Health and Medicine at UT Austin Dell Medical School, will share his best tips for career success within the national CTSA program.

In case you missed it, several of our former CCTS trainees, awardees, and panel participants have made the news recently. We applaud their accomplishments, highlighted here to inspire the next generation of clinical and translational scientists, as well as the CCTS experts who supported these super stars along the way (many of whom have recently made the news as well!).

The theme for this year's ATTIS is "bioinformatics application," focusing on scientific findings and how they were enabled with bioinformatics and functional genomics techniques including genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, epigenomics and various other applications of next-generation sequencing. ATTIS will take place March 28 at the Hilton Birmingham at UAB. Both short podium presentations and poster presentations are invited. Submit an abstract here.

This research collaboration is now accepting applications for joint projects between UAB's O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and either Tuskegee University or the Morehouse School of Medicine. All faculty with expertise in basic, clinical/translational, or cancer control/population science and health outcomes are encouraged to apply. Junior investigators also welcome but must submit a detailed Career Development and Mentorship Plan. Applications are due by April 8.
