The REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study is an ongoing, national cohort study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through a partnership between the National Institute of Neurologic Diseases and Stroke and the National Institute of Aging. Between 2003-2007, the study enrolled 30,239 black and white participants from the continental United States. For over 2 decades and with more than 100 million dollars in NIH funding, the study has followed its participants with more than 97% retention to understand why Southerners and Black Americans have higher rates of stroke and related diseases that affect brain health.
