Are you starting to build your online and blended courses for this Fall? Don’t do it from scratch! UAB eLearning offers course templates for online and blended courses. These templates can provide structure for setting up your course quickly in Canvas. They can be imported into your Canvas course shell, and you can customize them to meet your students’ needs. The eLearning team reviews and updates these templates regularly for each semester.

You can request to have all or specific components of the template placed into your Canvas course by submitting an eLearning course template request. If you need any other instructional design assistance besides the course template, please contact eLearning by submitting an instructional design service request.

UAB eLearning course templates include the following main components:

Homepage

This is the landing page for the course. This editable page includes a Canvas Overview interactive activity, instructions for beginning the course, and buttons for accessing the course content.

Note: The eLearning team has updated the Canvas Overview interactive activity. If you copied our course template prior to Summer 2021, you may want to replace the Canvas overview activity with the updated version.

Course Information Module

This is the first module on the Modules page with introductory information. It also includes two student resources the eLearning team created: Netiquette and Tips for Online Success interactive activities.

UAB Policies and Resources Module

This is the second module on the Modules page, which includes the information about UAB policies, technology resources, and student academic and support services.

Note: The eLearning team has updated the information on these three pages. Now they are embedded webpages instead of pages with text. If you copied our course template prior to Summer 2021, you may want to replace them with the updated version. We update the information on these webpages regularly. Changes to these webpages will automatically apply to the pages in Canvas.

15 Weekly Modules

Each weekly module includes an About Week page, an Instructional Materials page (online course template) or a Week Schedule page (blended course templates), a placeholder discussion board (online course template), and a wrap up page.

The About Week page is an editable page to introduce the week’s topic, activities, and learning objectives. The Instructional Materials page in the online course template is an editable page where you add required readings, videos, and any other supplementary materials. The Week Schedule page in the blended course templates is a place to provide students information for each class session. This page can be customized according to your class format and schedule. The Wrap Up page is an editable page to summarize key points from the week.
