Due to updates from Instructure, UAB’s timeline for fully transitioning to Canvas New Quizzes has shifted. UAB will now tentatively default to using Canvas New Quizzes starting in the Spring 2025 semester. Please view our revised timeline for more information. Instructors can continue to use Canvas Classic Quizzes for the Fall 2024 semester.

In an update during the Spring 2024 semester, the Office of Learning Technologies advised instructors to use “User Files” with Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor-enabled Canvas New Quizzes. Instructors can now use “User Files” or “Course Files” without impacting functionality. Instructors who utilize Respondus 4.0 for authoring exams must complete additional steps to author Canvas New Quizzes. Please view these instructions from Respondus if you want to author Canvas New Quizzes using Respondus 4.0. The Office of Learning Technologies will continue to update best practices regarding using Canvas New Quizzes with Respondus.

The Office of Learning Technologies encourages instructors to explore Canvas New Quizzes' features. Canvas New Quizzes features new options for adding accommodations for students. Canvas New Quizzes allows instructors to set time accommodations for a student for all quizzes in a course. Instructors can also add time accommodations to single quizzes using quiz moderation. Additional guides on Canvas New Quizzes can be found in the Canvas Instructor Guide. Instructors can learn more about New Quizzes by completing the New Quizzes Essentials training module in the Canvas Training Services Portal. This 90-minute, on-demand course explores New Quizzes including the creation process, moderation and grading options, item bank management, and how to import and migrate existing quiz content.

As we continue our transition to New Quizzes, please continue to follow updates on our New Quizzes webpage. We encourage instructors to ask questions and give feedback by submitting an Ask OLT ticket
