I have always wanted to be a structural engineer but combining my professional career as a civil engineer and pursuing a graduate degree in structural engineering has been difficult for me. The UAB concentration in structural engineering has made the difference for me since I enrolled. It is excellently structured to accommodate professionals like me. In addition, the academic and professional expertise of the faculty and learning support available to students has made it one of the best decisions I have taken.
Welcome to the online Master of Engineering (MEng) with a concentration in Structural Engineering (SE) at UAB. The concentration is available 100% online and is designed for working professionals. A typical plan of study for a working professional is two courses per term, allowing the degree to be completed in about 19 months.
Our Focus
SE is focused on preparing structural engineers for the technical and operational sides of the structural engineering profession. To accomplish this dual focus, the curriculum includes a minimum of seven technical courses related to structural engineering and up to three courses from our Construction Engineering Management (CEM) track of study covering business and management aspects of the structural engineering profession.
The structural engineering courses build on the typical undergraduate coursework in structural engineering including advanced topics in steel design, concrete design, structural analysis, and structural mechanics, as well as an introduction to bridge engineering. These courses are designed to meet the immediate technical needs of professionals working as design engineers.
Our curriculum, however, realizes that in addition to technical prowess, the long-term success of an engineer also requires business and management skills, whether for managing teams of design engineers, managing projects from start to finish, budgeting and scheduling for projects, or growing into a business development role. To round out our graduates’ skills in these areas, the CEM electives offered encompass courses in project management, scheduling, risk management, contracts, engineering economics, sustainability, and building information modeling.
