Information for Presenters
Presentation Guidelines
- Each speaker's presentation should be between 20-30 minutes, allowing adequate time for audience participation/discussion.
- Talks should be educational and thought provoking.
- The Speaker should convey mass spec's utility in his/her topic of discussion while
providing insight into the how/why?
- Formulate the reasoning for choosing mass spectrometry.
- Spell out how mass spectrometry facilitated your research goal.
- Provide a minor discussion of the technology/theory (enough to facilitate basic understanding across the disciplines).
- Speaker should strive to create a casual, open-forum environment (NOT seminar style).
- Speaker should focus on the application of MS, careful to avoid overly technical MS jargon unfamiliar to the non-MS community.
- Speaker should encourage audience involvement.
- Please let us (LeeAnn or David) know if you do NOT want your presentation published on our website (http://www.uab.edu/flyingions).
- Stressing again that this is NOT a seminar (please do not just present your work).
We aim to create a casual, learning environment where a wide spectrum of the UAB community can begin to identify with mass spectrometry. While some of the aforementioned guidelines may appear strict or limiting, we want to ensure that attendees are comfortable with the presented topics. Our goal of these discussions is to facilitate dialog of use to all in attendance, hence our choice of an informal interest group.
When formatting a talk, think back to the early days of your introduction into mass spectrometry: What inspired you? What led you to follow your current path? What intrigues you most about the technology? These are the kind of ideas we want to stimulate among our audience, to influence both their research and ours.
