OVERVIEW
All GBS students are members of GBSO to the extent that they are welcome to attend any GBSO events and communicate their concerns to GBSO leadership through their respective theme representatives. Your representatives in the GBSO committee are here to serve you and welcome your contact at any time!
ELIGIBILITY FOR GBSO LEADERSHIP
Eligibility to apply as a GBSO representative is limited to currently enrolled graduate students in good academic standing, as defined by the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Additionally, representatives must be members of a GBS theme: Biochemistry & Structural Biology; Cancer Biology; Cell, Molecular & Developmental Biology; Genetics, Genomics & Bioinformatics; Immunology; Microbiology; Neuroscience; Pathobiology, Pharmacology & Physiology. Each of the eight themes is represented by a minimum of one and a maximum of two theme representatives serving at a given time on the GBSO committee.
The office of representative is open to all students without discrimination on the basis of race, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, personal appearance, age, national origin, gender identity, political affiliation, physical or mental disability, or on the basis of rights secured by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. The University of Alabama at Birmingham and Graduate Biomedical Student Outreach prohibit discrimination in admission, educational programs, and other student matters on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, national origin, disability unrelated to program performance, veteran status, or family medical history.
Every GBSO representative seat is up for election in May of each year. Prospective members may be nominated by any GBS theme director or manager, or by any standing member of GBSO. They shall be elected by a majority vote of attending GBSO members constituting a quorum. Members intending to step down from the GBSO committee inform the GBSO Executive Board and GBS program director or manager in March of each year, facilitating sufficient time for membership turnover prior to officer elections in May. Every year, outgoing members are officially relieved of their duties on July 31.
MEETINGS
Regular business meetings are held every third Wednesday of the month from 5:00PM - 6:00PM in the Shelby Biomedical Research Building, Conference Room 318 (virtually via Zoom during COVID-19 induced social distancing measures). Business meetings are open to all current or prospective GBSO committee members, and agendas are announced by the President at least one week prior to each meeting. Sub-committees convene intermittently outside the regular business meetings at a time and location as stipulated by the sub-committee chair(s).
