Examples of UAB HPU Initiatives
Health Promoting Universities:
- Aspire to infuse health into all they do
- Creates a campus culture of compassion and wellbeing
- Improve the health of the people who live, learn, work, play and love there
- Strengthen the ecological, social and economic sustainability of our communities and wider society
In alignment with the Okanagan Charter these initiatives provide examples of:
- Settings and whole system approaches,
- Comprehensive and campus-wide approaches,
- Participatory approaches that engage the voice of students and others,
- Trans-disciplinary collaborations and cross-sector partnerships,
- Research, innovation and evidence-informed action,
- Using a salutogenic approach (focus on factors that support health and wellbeing rather than on disease) - Build on strengths/asset-based,
- Valuing local and indigenous communities’ contexts and priorities, or
- Acting on existing universal responsibility
These UAB initiatives are highlighted as they take a settings approach and are engaged in fostering systems that support one, if not all, of the following:
- Holistic personal health and safety,
- Community health and safety, or
- A sustainable, resilient, and thriving ecosystem
They are also actively engaged in either or both actions set forth by the Okanagan Charter:
- Action 1: Embed health into all aspects of campus culture, across the administration, operations and academic mandates.
- Action 2: Lead health promotion action and collaboration locally and globally.
