HR Updates

An update to HR Policy 319: Educational Assistance Program expanding the program’s eligibly went into effect this month, and two more HR policies will soon be updated in the UAB Policies and Procedures Library.

HR Policy 319: Educational Assistance Program

UAB offers educational assistance benefits to eligible UAB employees and their spouses and/or dependent children who are interested in pursuing a degree at UAB. HR Policy 319, which clarifies the educational assistance program, was recently updated to add (07) residents and (21) post doc employees to those eligible for the program, in addition to full-time regular (01) employees and all 3/12-hour shift (12) employees.

The change went into effect on December 1, 2024.

For details, including additional eligibility requirements and number of course work hours supported, see the full policy in the UAB Policies and Procedures Library.

HR Policy 302: Holidays

HR Policy 302, which details the use of personal holidays for regular employees, will soon be updated with a new section detailing personal holiday use for part-time and reduced work schedule (32 hours or more and 10 month) employees.

Effective January 1, 2025, exempt part-time and reduced work schedule employees in units that observe all UAB designated holidays will be paid automatically for designated holidays and no longer need to enter Personal Holiday time. They will also receive up to 24 hours of prorated personal holiday leave annually beginning July 1, 2025, based on their FTE (full-time equivalent).

Nonexempt part-time and reduced work schedule employees will continue to accrue at a prorated amount based on hours paid per pay period up to 96 hours per year.

Severance Pay and Benefits Policy for Nonfaculty Employees

UAB's severance program is designed to provide severance pay and benefits for eligible employees during a period of employment transition.

Effective January 1, 2025, severance pay distributed through normal payroll processing will not be subject to Teachers’ Retirement System of Alabama (TRS) deductions. Displaced employees will still be eligible to continue participation in their previously elected benefit plans while they are on payroll, with the exception of TRS deductions.

To ensure deductions are stopped after the last day worked, departments should contact the UAB Benefits Office to have the displaced employee removed from the TRS deduction list.
