Aligning with the Vision and Mission of the Organization
UAB IT has a clearly defined vision, mission and values, as well as a set of seven strategic imperatives that establish a clear direction, purpose, and benchmarks for success. Each fiscal year (October) we establish individual and team goals based on our strategic plan.
Because UAB is a world-class educational and research university, we know that UAB deserves a world-class information technology organization. Our individual and team goals support our mission and the IT Strategic Plan. Managers and employees will collaborate to establish goals at the beginning of each year.
Individual Training Plans
Developing new skills is essential to your growth and success at UAB IT. As a standard policy, all employees have a training plan. Learning starts from day one, and we invest in your long-term development. Each employee has different needs for training, and each has different modes of training from which they can learn most successfully. Training plans should also support the goals set for the coming fiscal year by providing the necessary skills for the employee to achieve their goals. Managers and employees will collaborate to establish training plans at the beginning of each fiscal year.
Quarterly Review Meetings
To understand your goals and expectations in your role, you will have quarterly check-ins with your manager. Prior to these meetings, you should update your goals and training plan in SharePoint. The meetings are held the first two weeks of each quarter (October, Jan, April, July). These meetings are to ensure:
- Expectations are clear.
- Goals are on track.
- Ample support is being provided.
Annual Performance Evaluations – Align Performance with Pay
UAB IT requires an annual performance evaluation for each employee.
Performance management consists of a performance evaluation which reviews what you do (performance goals), and how you do it (UAB Success Model and IT Critical Core Values). It should be noted that in an effort to be a world-class IT department, the IT performance management process raises the bar on performance and emphasizes continual improvement and employee development.
Employees in their current position on or before March of this year are eligible for merit raises. Any employee who receives one internal written warning during the fiscal year (Oct. 1-Sept. 30) may be eligible for a merit increase if the reporting manager advocates for the employee based on their annualized performance. The IT Executive Leadership Team will review these and notify IT Talent Management Office of any changes.

Welcome to UAB IT!
You are joining a team at UAB IT that is committed to empowering members of the UAB campus to achieve success through technology.
Our mission is to respond effectively to a changing world with agile, innovative, robust and secure services and applications to the University of Alabama at Birmingham so as to educate and inspire students; empower educators, researchers and administrators; and advance the state of knowledge in Alabama and the world.
We’ve made a commitment to achieve at least 100 wins for UAB each year, and four years into that goal, we’ve already achieved more than 500 wins.
At UAB IT, we are in a state of continuous improvement as we strive to become a world-class IT organization. Every year you will be challenged to set and achieve new goals, and we are committed to investing in training for each employee.
But we also enjoy ourselves and each other in UAB IT. We’ve made a group trip to see each new “Star Wars” film an annual tradition; we celebrate Homecoming by participating in the parade and other events; we share our culinary skills with an annual "Souper Bowl and Chili" contest; and we lead the UAB Toy Drive to collect gifts for children in need every holiday season.
At UAB IT, people are our most precious resource. I’m pleased you have chosen to join us.

Curtis A. Carver Jr., Ph.D.
Dr. Carver, who was named vice president for information technology and chief information officer in June 2015, has challenged his team at UAB to be agents of innovation who help empower the work at UAB through robust infrastructure, enhanced security and world-class customer service and solutions.
During Dr. Carver’s tenure, UAB has invested in its research computing infrastructure, building the state’s fastest supercomputer, which has helped generate more than $300 million in grants. UAB has also strengthened its security operations to reduce risk; built the fastest network among state higher education institutions; and introduced services and solutions to help streamline processes and improve academic success. During the COVID pandemic, Dr. Carver’s team transformed classroom technology to accommodate hybrid classes; developed a statewide exposure notification app with a patent-pending verification method; and helped narrow the digital divide by offering free WiFi to campus and area students and loaner laptops to students in need.
In all, the UAB IT team has achieved more than 800 technology wins since 2015.
A senior leader in higher education information technology, Dr. Carver came to UAB from his position as vice chancellor and chief information officer for the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, having previously held key leadership positions at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
Dr. Carver earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and his master’s degree and doctorate in computer science from Texas A&M University. Throughout his career, he has received numerous national and international honors and awards for military, teaching, and research excellence, including the Alabama CIO Leadership Award, Georgia CIO of the Year, Information Week’s Elite 100 ranking, and the National State CIO Association’s Enterprise IT Management award. During his tenure at UAB, the University earned the CIO 100 Award for its innovative work during the COVID pandemic. Dr. Carver is a frequent keynote speaker and has published extensively.
"In ten years, we will not only catch up with the rest of the world in terms of best in breed performance, but we will pass them so that we are creating best-in-class practices and are engaged in the national conversation on how information technology can transform higher education. We enable world-class performance at UAB and in the Birmingham community."
In Dr. Carver's own words: "My vision for UAB IT is a world-class IT organization that effectively balances cost efficiency, agility, and innovation. We are an organization that values its employees as our most precious resource, and thus we create an environment that thrives at a pace of sustainable innovation over the long term. Our relationships with our customers, business partners, and vendors are long-term relationships that allow us to move at the speed of trust. This vision does not depend on one person but instead on a dedicated team where everyone is an agent of innovation and aligned to support the University of Alabama at Birmingham."
