UAB IT has worked with University Relations to improve access to the “front door” to UAB systems.
“Since our SSO page is the front door to most critical UAB applications, we wanted to make sure that we make that page as accessible as possible,” said Rajesh Pillai, director of identity management and integrations.
Pillai and his team worked with the web accessibility manager from Digital Strategy & Marketing on the University Relations team to identify and fix some of the issues based on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) recommendations.
Items both teams updated include:
- Fixing the set language to en-US, which means language set as used in the United States
- Make the login and password boxes permanent
- Remove several items from the original screen to benefit accessibility
Why is updating for accessibility so important? eAccessibility is an inclusive practice of ensuring there are no barriers that prevent interaction with websites by people with physical disabilities, situational disabilities, and socio-economic restrictions.
Making sure UAB’s sites are correctly designed, developed and edited allows more users to have equal access to information and functionality. For a web page to be accessible, all-important aspects of the page's functionality must be available so that assistive technology, such as screen readers, can understand and process the content and adapt it for the user.
